CUVÉE M MALBEC VIN de FRANCE Domaine Mongeart Mugneret

Puntaje: 90

Score: 90/100

Medium-deep plum red.

Fresh cherries take center stage on the nose, supported by subtle notes of leather and woodland mushrooms. Restrained, refined and quietly complex.

The palate is driven by bright acidity that amplifies the impression of fresh cherries. Medium-bodied, with fine, almost fully resolved tannins, the wine flows effortlessly across the palate. Cedar, leather and earthy mushroom nuances weave seamlessly through the fruit, creating a harmonious and balanced profile. This is a distinctive expression of Malbec, one defined by energy and character rather than sheer power. The acidity is beautifully integrated, lending freshness without ever becoming intrusive. Medium-bodied, with impressive length and persistence, the finish reveals delicate fresh floral notes on the retronasal.

The wine’s greatest strength lies in its vitality and finesse.

Perhaps even more remarkable than the wine itself is its origin. Malbec is anything but a traditional variety in Burgundy, making this a genuinely original project. Hopefully, it will encourage further exploration of the region’s potential beyond its established varieties. It is not about challenging Burgundy’s traditions, but about expanding the range of high-quality expressions that Malbec can offer.

One curious detail is the absence of a vintage indication on the label.

Because Malbec is not an authorised variety under Burgundy appellation regulations, the grape name cannot appear on the label. As a result, the wine is released under the Vin de France designation.

Founded in 1620, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret owns approximately 30 hectares of vineyards across the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. The estate is best known for its Pinot Noir, including five Grand Cru wines.

The proprietor discovered Malbec during a visit to Argentina some 30 years ago and was so impressed by the variety that he decided to plant it on his own estate. The result is the first known Malbec vineyard in the Côte de Nuits.
